My Health Journey
Marilia Chamon,
Registered Nutritional Therapist and Gut Health Specialist
I grew up with robust health and could eat and drink whatever I wanted without experiencing a single symptom of indigestion, but all that changed after an episode of food poisoning - a slice of pizza that changed my life.
Soon after this event I started experiencing all sorts of digestive distress - extreme bloating, abdominal pain, multiple food intolerances, reflux, heartburn, indigestion - you name it, I felt it. After running a series of medical tests (that came back clear) I was diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and was told my symptoms were a result of stress and anxiety. I had a hard time accepting that diagnosis because for my entire life I had not suffered with digestive symptoms and it was clear to me the episode of food poisoning was the trigger event to my digestive distress.
Due to the lack of diligence from the many health professionals I visited, my condition was left untreated and I continued to suffer with debilitating symptoms as the only solution provided to me were antacids and antidepressants.
I spent the next several years trying to get to the root cause of my problem - my question was, if it is just IBS why are my symptoms getting progressively worse? Unfortunately no one had the answer.
I felt hopeless and saw myself in a position where I had to take control of my health. Through my own research I learned about post-infectious IBS (PI-IBS), a condition that affects 1 in every 9 people who experience an episode of food poisoning, and that a bacterial infection can result in gut nerve damage and impaired gut flow, leading to the development of Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). Suddenly my decade long of suffering made sense!
During this long and painful journey I gained extensive knowledge and a deep interest in digestive health, my desire to help others lead me to qualify as a nutritional therapist and specialise in functional gut disorders.
In (gut) health,
Marilia
